CORE assistant dean to return to Iraq
Terry A. Johnson, D.O., (’91), CORE assistant dean and clinical associate professor of family medicine at Southern Ohio Medical Center, will deploy to Iraq—for the third time—with the Ohio Army National Guard early next year as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom 9. His tour of duty is expected to last about three and one-half months.
“The support I have received from SOMC and OU-COM has been exceptional,” said Johnson, who directs the Family Practice Residency program at SOMC in Portsmouth and also serves as Scioto County Coroner. “SOMC and Ohio University go above and beyond in their support of America’s soldiers. They are backing me 100 percent, just as they do for all their military employees.”
Johnson is a U.S. Army colonel and commander of the Ohio Army National Guard’s Medical Detachment. His two previous deployments to Iraq were in 2004 and 2006.
During the past few weeks, Johnson, who also chairs the Scioto County Republican Party, was interviewed by several national media outlets about Southern Ohio’s role in the 2008 presidential election. He has been quoted in the Associated Press, the Washington Post, the New York Daily News and in a variety of newspapers and television stations in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky.

Next Athens County coroner to hail from OU-COM
Two OU-COM faculty members are vying for the position of Athens County coroner. Harold Clay Thompson, D.O., assistant professor of emergency medicine (Democrat), and Todd Fredricks, D.O. (’93), assistant professor of family medicine (Republican), are both running for the four-year term. ROUNDS equally extends the best of luck to both candidates for the Nov. 4 general election
Specialty spotlight: Otolaryngology
Although residency programs in otolaryngology—the field of ear, nose, throat, and head and neck medicine—are highly competitive, the specialty makes for a versatile and rewarding career, according to Phillip L. Khalil, D.O. (’01).
Khalil addressed first- and second-year students on Oct. 21 as part of the Career Medical Specialties Series. He runs a private practice at Ohio Valley Head and Neck Surgery in Cuyahoga Falls and Hudson, Ohio.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Faculty Development Tidbit: Long-term memory—Repeat to remember.
First memory traces are flexible, changeable and at great risk of extinction. Some, however, strengthen with time, appearing indefinitely retrievable and resistant to amendment. These are long-term memories.
· Most memories disappear within minutes, but those that survive the fragile period tend to strengthen with time.
· Long-term memories form through a two-way conversation between the hippocampus and the cortex, until the hippocampus breaks the connection and the memory is fixed in the cortex—which can take years.
· Our brains give us only an approximate view of past reality, because they mix new knowledge with memories and store them together as one.
· To make long-term memory more reliable, incorporate new information gradually and repeat it frequently, in timed intervals.
