ID badges for OU-COM personnel

Within the next few weeks, all OU-COM faculty, staff and student employees will receive identification badges, which must be worn at all times in OU-COM facilities, said Beth Maxon, director of human resources and administrative services.

The badges will improve security, facilitate copier access and allow for easier identification of OU-COM personnel, Maxon said. A magnetic strip on the back of the badges will be used in swipe locks that will be installed on doors in Grosvenor and possibly Irvine for after-hours access.

The badges feature a photograph of the employee, his or her name, academic credentials, the college name and department or unit affiliation.

A policy concerning the badges was adopted by the OU-COM Executive Committee earlier this year and will be posted on the college’s Web site soon. Faculty and staff will receive additional information about the badges via e-mail, Maxon said.

Parking lots to close for student move-in

As part of this year’s student move-in week, several parking lots around OU-COM buildings will be closed between Thurs., Sept. 4, and Sun., Sept. 8. The following parking areas will close. (Use this map as a reference: http://www.facilities.ohiou.edu/parking/documents/ou_parking_map.pdf):

For an alternative to driving during move-in week, the Richland Avenue route of the city’s bus system, Athens Transit, makes hourly stops next to the OU-COM buildings. The bus departs from East Washington Street next to the city parking garage at five minutes after the hour (beginning at 7:05 a.m.) and arrives next to West Green at 16 minutes after the hour.

The return trip to Court Street stops at Peden Stadium at 36 minutes past the hour and detours to South Green before returning to Porter Hall and Grover Center at 43 minutes after the hour. This bus returns to the city parking garage at 10 minutes before the hour.

The bus costs $1 per trip within the city limits and $1.25 outside the city, with free transfers between routes. Fares are reduced for the elderly and handicapped, and children under the age of six ride free. The city also sells a 30-ride pass on the bus, and both 90-day and yearly passes at the mayor’s office.

For more on routes, arrival and departure times and bus stop locations, visit the Athens Transit Web site: http://www.athenstransit.org/.

Workers “top off” ARC building

You may have noticed a small tree sprouting atop the frames of the Academic & Research Center.

The same week that OU-COM’s class of 2012 began their August anatomy immersion, constructions workers erected the topmost structural elements of the ARC building—along with a small evergreen tree and an American flag. This reflects a centuries-old tradition referred to as “topping off” a building. CORRECTION

Crosswalk clarification

An Aug. 25 Rounds item erroneously reported that motorists maintain right-of-way through the new painted crosswalks on Richland Avenue near West Green.

According to Athens Service-Safety Director Paula Horan Moseley, pedestrians now have right-of-way when crossing this Richland Avenue crosswalk (with the exception of emergency vehicles using flashing lights and/or sirens).

Moseley said that the city will conduct a media campaign to alert motorists about the crosswalk, and both the Athens and OU police will be on site next week directing pedestrians to use the crosswalk. The city also plans to install additional signage in the medium advising motorists of the need to yield to pedestrians, Moseley said.

Faculty Development Tidbit: Key Teaching Behaviors, Part IV

Here’s the last in “Learning Climate” tips I picked up from a recent “Systematic approach for teaching improvement” session.

While establishing a stimulating, engaging and inclusive learning climate, always be aware of boundaries and potential obstacles:

·        Acknowledge learners’ limitations

·        Invite learners to bring up perceived problems

·        Admit your own errors or limitations

·        Avoid being dogmatic

·        Balance challenge, support and encouragement

You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm. If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, send it to me. I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit. (Courtesy of Steve Davis, Ph.D., USAF Major (Ret), director of faculty development).
