UMA begins weekend hours in Parks Hall clinic
University Medical Associates ExpressCare Clinic in Parks Hall will offer weekend hours beginning Sat., Sept. 13. The clinic will see patients on both Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Appointments are not necessary.
“ExpressCare is where you would go for an acute illness, like a sore throat or cough, or a minor injury,” said Martha Simpson, D.O., M.B.A., F.A.C.O.F.P., associate professor of family medicine and a UMA physician.
UMA is offering the weekend hours to better serve the Athens community and university faculty, staff and students, Simpson said.
UMA will continue to provide regular weekday clinic services Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For information, contact UMA at 593.2456.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Faculty Development Tidbit: Self-directed learning
Self-directed learning is initiated by an individual learner’s needs, goals and interests. Teachers can use different approaches to influence motivation and promote different resources, thereby fostering self-directed learning:
· Motivation (types, obstacles)
1. Ask learners to identify goals, needs and interests.
2. Ask learners how they want to address needs.
3. Explicitly reinforce evidence of self-directed learning.
4. Use controversy/doubt/curiosity.
5. Brainstorm with learners.
6. Record topics for further consideration.
7. Provide opportunities for learners to pursue their chosen topics.
8. Model motivating SDL behaviors.
You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development Web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm. If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, send it to me. I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit. (Courtesy of Steve Davis, Ph.D., USAF Major (Ret), director of faculty development).
