Alden Library’s health collection moved

The Vernon R. Alden Library’s Health Sciences collection underwent a transformation this summer. Instead of being housed altogether on the third floor, health-related journals, books and other materials have been integrated throughout the library’s general collections.

All health-related microfilm items have moved to the first floor, with the rest of the library’s microfilm. Health reference materials remain on the third floor, and current health periodicals are arranged alphabetically on the fourth floor.

Health-related government documents have moved to the fifth floor, health books with call numbers H to L to the sixth floor, and those with call numbers M to Z to the seventh floor. The majority of health books ended up on the seventh floor.

Meanwhile, the library has expanded its Health Sciences digital collection of journals and databases to include more titles and complete runs of journals. Now about 80 percent of the Health Sciences collection is available online to OU students and personnel, according to the Alden Library Web site.

For more, contact Debi Orr, health sciences librarian, at orrd@ohio.edu or 593-0249, or send a message to healthinfo@ohio.edu.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: Self-directed learning

Self-directed learning is initiated by an individual learner’s needs, goals and interests. Teachers can use different approaches to influence motivation and promote different resources, thereby fostering self-directed learning:

Resources (outside reading, consultation, computer resources)

o       Discuss approaches to using resources for lifelong learning

o       Inform learners about resources for lifelong learning

o       Model use of resources for lifelong learning.

You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development Web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm. If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, send it to me. I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit. (Courtesy of Steve Davis, Ph.D., USAF Major (Ret), director of faculty development).
