Student wins case presentation award in college first

Robert Baker, OMS III, ranked second in the A. Hollis Wolf Case Presentations Competition at the recent annual convention for the American Academy of Osteopathy for his case presentation on osteopathic manipulative treatment for the Lower Cross Syndrome.

This is the first time OU-COM has been represented in the student competition, according to Stevan Walkowski, D.O., assistant professor of family medicine, who also attended the convention.

"Robert Baker is a major advocate for the use of OMM in practice," Walkowski says. "His presentation reflects his advanced knowledge and skillset."

Baker won free tuition to a five-day, full basic biodynamic OMM course in New Hampshire and a $300 cash prize.

Careers in Medicine program launched

The Office of Student Affairs hosted a kick-off event Friday, April 3, for its new Careers in Medicine program, which helps students choose a medical specialty.

The office is utilizing the American Association of Medical Colleges Careers in Medicine program to help guide medical students through the process of selecting a specialty.

The four-phase Careers in Medicine program will provide tools and resources to help students identify the field that best suits their individual needs, said Holly Jacobs, associate director of student affairs.

As part of the program, the student affairs office created a web site that guides medical students through a structural process of career planning.

More information about the program will appear on the OU-COM web site later this week. The Office of Student Affairs also will host a mandatory informational session on the program Wednesday, April 29.

Burns elected to national leadership position

Nora Burns, OMS II, was elected to a leadership position within the American Medical Student Association. Burns will be the global health education coordinator for the Global Health Action Committee.

Burns will help promote international programs for medical students by updating a comprehensive web list of international medical education opportunities.

She also is assisting with the design of a web page that allows students to evaluate international medical education/research programs they have participated in.

Students receive new identification cards

New identification badges were distributed last week to students, who must wear them at all times while in OU-COM buildings. Eventually, the badges will be necessary to operate door locks in Grosvenor and Irvine Halls and to use OU-COM copy machines.

Third- and fourth-year students must also wear the OU-COM ID badge at their CORE sites, in addition to their required hospital IDs.

Defaced, lost or stolen badges must be replaced at a fee. If either the OU-COM badge or the university identification card is lost or stolen, both must be replaced at the same time. Students are required to contact either the Office of Student Affairs or the Office of Academic Affairs if their badges are lost, damaged or stolen; if their names change; or if their personal appearances substantially change.

The badges feature each student's photograph, class year, university and college logos, and an expiration date. The reverse side of the student cards also includes the OU-COM Honor Code.

The identification cards are color-coded by class graduation year: red for the Class of 2009, yellow for 2010, green for 2011 and blue for 2012.

Walsh concludes duty in Iraq

This month, R.C. Clay Walsh, Jr., D.O., who serves on the CORE Osteopathic Principles and Practices Committee, concludes his duty in Iraq as a flight surgeon for the 178th Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard.

Walsh, director of Falls Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital, serves in the 24-hour ER clinic for the 332nd Wing of the 447th Group, which staffs two physicians, one physician assistant and a dentist. Along with his emergency medicine duties, Walsh provides osteopathic manipulative treatment several times a week. He reports that this service is well-received, “especially from the Special Forces guys.”

Walsh is also involved in the flight surgeon training program set up by the US Air Force, a new training program that brings together the civilians and the U.S. and Iraqi militaries.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: Focus your teaching

Do not overwhelm your students with your whole knowlege base. Focus on the course content and objectives. Spend more time reinforcing those goals and objectives, particularly when students have limited experience in the course content area. By not overwhelming your students, their long-term retention of the content should go up.
