Convocation welcome Class of 2013, honors Phillips awardees The 120 members of
the Class of 2013 enter their medical education at a crucial time for both the
State of Ohio and the nation, said Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric
Fingerhut.
Fingerhut delivered the keynote address at OU-COM’s 34th Convocation Ceremony
held Saturday at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. He also
received a Phillips Medal of Public Service, the highest award bestowed by the
college. The award also was given to David P. Blom, president and chief
executive officer of Columbus-based OhioHealth.

Visiting alumni counsel students
On Friday, a panel of alumni met with the Class of 2013. Panelists included
Jeffrey A. Stanley, D.O. (’82), president of the Society of Alumni and Friends
Board of Directors, and Christopher J. Loyke, D.O. (’88), who earlier this
summer became the new president of the Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA)—both
of whom participated in Saturday’s Convocation. They were joined by past OOA
President Barbara A. Bennett, D.O. (’84), and Sharon E. Van Nostran, D.O. (’98),
director of medical education at Akron City Hospital. The panelists discussed
osteopathic medicine and education and answered students’ questions.

Burnett featured on university site
Patricia Burnett, Ph.D., director of the office of student affairs, is one of 18
Ohio University faculty and staff members featured in a new web site showcasing
stories of those who were the first in their families to graduate from a
four-year institution.
Developed by Greg Lester, assistant director of the College Adjustment Program
in the Academic Advancement center, the narratives are designed to provide
mentoring opportunities for students and raise awareness of the number of
first-generation employees on campus.

Recent graduate follows own advice
Kristin Bodkin, D.O. (’09), was known to her OU-COM classmates as “the fruit
girl.” Not because she’s nuts, but because, during long hours of medical
lectures and study sessions, she brought in fruit to sell to her hungry
classmates.
“We would sit through these all-day lectures,” Bodkin says, “and you would see
your classmates going out and getting junk food from vending machines, because
it was the only snack option. So, I started bringing in apples and bananas,
charged fifty cents apiece, and it just caught on.”
This proactive commitment to health distinguished Bodkin from many of her peers.
While her classmates often lapsed into rounds of late-night lattes and chocolate
binges, Bodkin peddled fruit and ran marathons.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Faculty Development Tidbit: Metaphors for the working memory The popular
“pipeline” metaphor assumes the receiver gets what you send out. As much as we
might want to believe that an unobstructed pipeline exists between sender and
receiver, the limits of working memory put a major crimp in the process.
A more apt metaphor would be “the eye of the needle.” While both sensory and
long-term memory are nearly limitless, short-term memory, a filtering choke
point between the two, is more restricted.
Research shows that, in terms of short-term memory, less is more. In a study
using two multimedia presentations, the first featured interesting but
irrelevant graphics, and the second provided the same information, but without
the graphics.
Audiences who got the second presentation retained 69 percent more information
and were able to apply 105 percent more creative solutions using the information
that those who experienced the first presentation.
Don’t overload your presentation with extraneous information. People learn
better when information is broken up into digestible pieces—like slides, each
containing one main idea clearly summarized by a headline.
