OU challenges Miami to Blood Battle

Ohio University and the OU chapter of the American Red Cross challenge Miami University to see who can donate the most blood. OU-COM’s COMCorps program is helping to coordinate this effort.

Each school will host two large drives, with a goal of 100 donations each.  The total outcome on both campuses will be approximately 400 blood donations, all of which will benefit patients in need.

Every two seconds someone in America needs a blood transfusion, including victims of accidents, premature babies and cancer patients.

If you are at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and are in good general health, you may be eligible to donate blood. Donors must schedule an appointment beforehand and present positive identification. All donors will receive BW3’s gift certificates.

The two participating OU drives include:

ARC construction update

The Academic & Research Center (ARC) will lend a rosy contrast to these gray winter months. A progress report by project manager Dick Planisek explains that as brickwork pauses for cold weather, the pink insulation board sheathing will add an eye-catching hue to West Green.

As of late December, workers had protected the structure from the elements with the installation of all windows—including an atrium skylight—permanent and temporary doors and a weather-proof roof, Planisek reported. Contractors have installed temporary heat, allowing interior work to continue through the winter.

Wear red to battle heart disease

Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s national movement to celebrate the power we have to band together and wipe out heart disease. Thanks to the participation of millions of people across the country, the color red and the red dress have become linked with the ability all women have to improve their heart health and live stronger, longer lives.

Wear red and join our Community Health Programs in a health fair to celebrate this special occasion. CHP will offer OU-COM staff and students free screenings for cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure, as well as educational materials about cardiovascular health. Screenings are by appointment only.

Total cholesterol and glucose can be non-fasting, but a nine- to 12-hour fast is required for a cholesterol panel (HDL, LDL and triglyceride). While this service is free, donations will be accepted. All donation money goes to the American Heart Association.

Screenings are sponsored by Community Health Programs and the Appalachian Rural Health Institute.

Remember to wear your identification badges

Beth Maxon, director of human resources and administrative services, reminds all faculty and staff that identification badges and lanyards were distributed to faculty and staff in December. Please remember to wear your badges at all times within OU-COM facilities.

The badges may be used to access the public copiers in Irvine Hall, Grosvenor Hall and Grosvenor West. See the instructions near the copy machines/Equitrac equipment. The Equitrac equipment continues to allow staff to key in usernames and passwords. Badges are not needed to access the scanning capabilities on public copiers.

Please continue to carry your OU identification card with you. The OU-COM ID badges were not intended to replace the OU ID card.

At this time, the outside door keyless entrances (Grosvenor and Grosvenor West buildings) for after business hours are NOT activated. We are working on the details of this system and will communicate with you in the near future.

The OU-COM policy regarding the identification badges can be viewed at http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/policy/HumanResources/identification%20system.htm.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty development seminar

“Using concept maps to assess traditional and online classes,” presented by Donna Saulsberry, a professor in Las Cruces, NM, will explain how to use concept mapping both to enhance student learning and assess it.

The concept map is a tool that measures understanding beyond mere command of facts. It reveals what students know about the complexities and interrelationships in a given subject.

In 90 fast-paced minutes, you’ll get the tools you need to:

o       Obtain and use free mapping software.

o       Create your own concept maps.

o       Instruct students in map creation and write construction guidelines.

o       Use maps for initial, mid-term and final assessment.

o       Empower students to critique and evaluate one another’s maps.

o       Evaluate maps fairly and effectively.

·        Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1-2:30 p.m.

·        RSVP to kittlen@ohio.edu. (Attendance generates a memo for your record sent to your department head. Purchased and sponsored by your Office of Faculty Development. www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm.)

Faculty Development Tidbit: Self-Directed Learning

Self-directed learning is a teaching method that empowers students to take personal responsibility for their own learning.

Author Philip Candy identified about 100 traits associated with self-directed learning, among them: discipline, logic, collaboration, creativity, motivation, responsibility, confidence, reflection and self-awareness.

Learners must have the opportunity to develop and practice skills that directly improve self-directed learning, such as asking questions, critically appraising new information, identifying knowledge and skill gaps, and reflecting critically on learning process and outcomes.

Find more “Teaching Tips” at your OUCOM & CORE faculty development Web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm or www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm.

If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
