Class of 2013 begins orientation today

Our new class arrives on campus today for three days of orientation.

This evening, the class orientation picnic takes place at Dairy Lane Park. Tuesday through Thursday, the students attend a variety of orientation sessions and activities. Classes begin Friday.

OU-COM staff members selected for certificate program

Three OU-COM employees will participate in a new professional development certificate program for university classified staff.

Beginning in fall 2009, 20 university staff members -- including Molly deLaval, administrative associate for student affairs; Kelly Gorscak, accounting associate for administrative and financial services; and Misti Smith, administrative associate for medical development and alumni affairs -- will take one class each quarter (including one each summer) for 10 consecutive quarters. They earn college credit and a certificate for completion.

According to OUTLOOK, the program offers business training in problem-solving, analysis and information design software. Participants complete team and individual projects, give oral presentations, and create and present executive summaries and portfolios.

Gevitz ends OU-COM tenure all wet

Who knew OU-COM students, staff and faculty had such good arms?

Norman J. Gevitz, Ph.D., chair of social medicine, discovered that little-known fact  during a fundraiser for the Shannon Berry D.O. (’98), Endowed Scholarship fundraiser held last week outside of Irvine Hall. During the event, Gevitz, who officially retires this week, spent more time in the water than perched above it in his dunking tank. Each splash helped the event raise $2,000 for the scholarship fund.

CORE welcomes third-year students

The OU-COM Class of 2011 received their official welcome to clinical rotations Thursday, July 16, at the annual CORE Welcome Dinner.

The 107 students met assistant deans and administrators from various CORE sites at Ohio University’s Baker University Center for a meal, followed by the Student Clinicians Ceremony.

The event keynote speaker was Deborah Blackwell, D.O., vice president of medical education at Doctors Hospital/OhioHealth in Columbus.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: Attention!!!

People don’t pay attention to boring things.

·        The brain’s attention “spotlight” can focus on only one thing at a time: Don’t try to multitask!

·        We are better at seeing patterns and generalizing the meaning of an event than we are at recording details.

·        Emotional arousal helps the brain learn.

·        Audiences check out after 10 minutes, but you can keep grabbing them back with emotion-rich story-telling, interactive activities and events.

Find more “Teaching Tips” at your OU-COM & CORE faculty development Web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm or www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm. If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
