OU-COM helps fight cancer in Relay for Life

OU-COM staffers once again plan to participate in the 25th annual Athens County Relay For Life all-night event to benefit The American Cancer Society. They encourage other OU-COM students, staff and faculty to join them. Among OU-COM participants are:

Tipton, Pendergast and Smith are all cancer survivors.

Relay For Life is an overnight event during which more than 3.5 million people from 4,900 communities across the country come together in teams and camp out around local tracks or paths. At all times during the relays, a representative of each team walks or runs around the track to honor the lives of cancer survivors, remember lost loved ones and help fight cancer by raising money and awareness.

The Athens County Relay for Life will be held at Alexander High School’s football field and track, Friday, July 10 – Saturday, July 11. The event features entertainment, food, games and other activities.

The five OU-COM staff members will assist with several pre-event fundraising activities, including the sale of candy bars for $1 each and luminary bags honoring cancer victims and survivors for $10 each. A raffle of Longaberger basket items will also take place in July.

Next Wednesday, July 8, the women will host a donation lunch of “tacos in a bag” and baked goods in the lobby of the Department of Specialty Medicine, Grosvenor West, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Relay for Life event planners are also collecting canned food to donate to the Athens County Food Pantry. The cans first will be used to hold candles in luminary bags lining the track.

More OOA Convention highlights

Constance P. Cashen, D.O., CORE clinical professor of general surgery at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, received the Trustees Award at the 111th annual Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA) Convention earlier this month. The award is given periodically for dedicated service to the OOA.

Also, two OU-COM students placed in the OOA-CORE Research Poster Exhibition & Competition’s case report category. Family Medicine Fellow Rachel Holt took first place with her presentation, “Stiff person syndrome followed by latent autoimmune diabetes of adulthood,” while Kevin Baxter, OMS II, tied for second with his poster, “Panretinal acute multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy.” Holt won $1,000 and Baxter, $500.
