Two receive research funding
Felicia Nowak, M.D., associate professor of endocrinology, and Biren Patel, M.A., anatomical sciences instructor, received funding from Ohio University to expand their respective research projects.
Patel received $6,569 from the Ohio University Research Committee to examine the influence of different locomotor behaviors on density patterns in subchondral bone, a thin layer of bone found in the cartilage of the shoulder joint of primates.
Nowak received funding for a postdoctoral fellowship position to study the effects of an antioxidant-rich diet on prohibiting diabetes-related kidney damage. The funding was part of a $50,000 award given by Ohio University Post-Doctoral Fellowship Committee awarded for funding two fellowships.
Cuyahoga Falls makes changes
Summa Health System and the Western Reserve Hospital Partners (WRHP) announce that they will establish the Summa Western Reserve Hospital at the location of the current CORE site, Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital, according to a press release issued last week by Summa Health System.
Having received approval from Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, Summa Western Reserve Hospital, LLC, is set to take over operations of Summa Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital June 24.
In January, the Summa Health System and Summa Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital Boards of Directors voted to approve the sale of the operations of Summa Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital and the lease of the facility and employees to a joint venture between Summa and WRHP.
Li co-authors article with Ph.D. student
Yang V. Li, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical sciences, co-authored with his student, Ph.D. candidate Christian Stork, a paper, “Rising zinc: A significant cause of ischemic neuronal death in the CA1 region of rat hippocampus,” in the June 3 issue of the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism, of the Nature Publishing Company.
Their work was supported in part by grants from the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health.
Student presents research at national meeting
Steven Walston, OMS IV, presented his research at the June 3 Digestive Disease Week (DDW), a meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association Institute in Chicago.
Walston’s presentation, “Association between risk factors for constipation and severity of stool retention as analyzed by abdominal x-ray,” was given during the Aging, Physiology and Clinical Gastroenterology Research Forum of DDW, the biggest national meeting among GI tract researchers and gastroenterologists.
Also participating in the research were Jen-Tzer Gau, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of geriatrics; Michael Finamore, OMS IV; and Christopher P. Varacallo, OMS II.
