OU-COM ranks first in recent COMLEX scores
Graduates of the OU-COM Classes of 2007 and 2008 collectively earned both the highest national mean score and the second highest national first-time passage rate in the most recent Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA) Level Three.
The 130 OU-COM graduates who took the Level Three examination for the first time between December 2007 and January 2009 achieved a mean score of 562.1, ranking them the highest among the nation’s 22 osteopathic medical schools.
“Scoring first in the country on Level Three of the COMLEX exam is an important milestone for OU-COM,” said Dean Jack Brose, D.O. “This examination gives a strong indication of the clinical abilities of our graduates. I could not be prouder of them.”
OOA honors Zimmerman
Sharon Zimmerman, MPA, executive director of alumni affairs and director of medical development, received the sixth annual Osteopathic Spirit Award at the 111th Ohio Osteopathic Association Convention this past weekend.
Established in 2004, the award honors individuals who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to promoting the osteopathic profession. Recipients of the award must meet the following criteria:
“Sharon has been an excellent role model, constantly giving and representing the osteopathic profession through her leadership, professional achievements and dedication,” wrote Timothy J. Barreiro, D.O., assistant clinical professor of critical care medicine, who nominated Zimmerman.
Physician Diversity Program teams OU-COM with OhioHealth
A new partnership between OhioHealth and OU-COM provides minority medical students early and sustained exposure to professional practices within the OhioHealth system.
The Physician Diversity Scholars Program matches first-year Hispanic and African-American students with OhioHealth physicians from similar backgrounds in a series of mentoring activities intended to serve as a gateway to careers with OhioHealth.
The four-year program requires at least three shadowing, community service or professional organization events per semester during the first two years of medical school, followed by a more customized relationship, as led by the mentors, during their third- and fourth-year clinical rotations, when students must select at least three OhioHealth rotations.
Fourth-year student participates in nationwide study
Laurie Tuason, OMS IV, at the Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital, collaborated on a nationwide study involving 13 medical centers and 649 patients. As a member of the Data Coordinating Center Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Tuason assisted with the five-year study on the effect of dipyridamole plus aspirin in alleviating arteriovenous graft stenosis and thrombosis, a major cause of complications in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
The research study titled, “Effect of Dipyridamole plus Aspirin on Hemodialysis Graft Patency,” was published in The New England Journal of Medicine, May 21.
The conclusions indicate a significant but modest effect in reducing the risk of stenosis and improving the duration of primary unassisted patency of newly created grafts.
Keeping it in the family
Graduate Profile: Christina González, D.O. (’09),
When she graduated, Christina González, D.O., received her ceremonial hood from a mentor who has been there for her since before she entered OU-COM. “I was actually hooded by my stepfather, Park Studebaker, O.D.” González says.
González, who conducted international medical research in Ecuador as a student, was named the Student D.O. of the Year at this year’s Distinguished Osteopathic Commitment Awards, and she is currently finishing a fellowship in family practice at OU-COM.
“Growing up, I loved my pediatrician. She was always a proponent of me taking care of myself. I thought that was so empowering,” González says. “I choose family medicine because I get to do everything and be involved in lots of different aspects of care, like my (former) pediatrician.”
