PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: Tactics that encourage active learning.

To encourage active listening, routinely call on students to:

·        Summarize or elaborate on what the teacher and fellow students have said.

·        Relate the issue to their knowledge or experience.

·        Give examples of a concept.

·        Make connections among related concepts.

·        Compare/contrast their point of view on an issue with that of the instructor, other students, the author, etc.

·        Write down the above responses and/or their most pressing questions.

·        Discuss those responses/questions with a partner and participate in a group discussion facilitated by the instructor.
