Shubrook named ACOFP Young Physician of the Year

Jay Shubrook Jr., D.O. (’96), assistant professor of family medicine received the Young Physician of the Year Award from the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) at last week’s 46th Annual ACOFP Convention and Exhibition in D.C.

Shubrook also became the new editor of ACOFP’s journal, The Osteopathic Family Physician News. As part of his new duties, Shubrook will lead an editorial board effort to take the publication from its current newsletter format to that of a more scholarly peer-reviewed journal. The new publication, renamed Osteopathic Family Physician, is expected to launch in July.

“We are working to have Osteopathic Family Physician become a publication that represents the best of osteopathic family medicine, including educational initiatives, original research and important advances in practice management,” Shubrook said. “Our further hope is that it would be viewed as an authoritative resource by those outside the profession who want to better understand the breadth and scope of osteopathic family medicine.”

Dr. Jacqueline Wolf publishes book on obstetric anesthesia

Practices in childbirth are driven less by medical innovation and more by socio-cultural forces—sometimes to the detriment of mothers and their babies, writes Jacqueline Wolf, Ph.D., associate professor of social medicine, in Deliver Me from Pain: Anesthesia and Birth in America. The book, published this month by The Johns Hopkins University Press, examines the development of, and common misconceptions surrounding, one obstetric practice: anesthesia.

OU-COM sees boom in military recruits

This is a record-breaking year at OU-COM for future military doctors. Considering that recent years have seen just two or three annual military medicine recruits, this represents a massive leap.

With the help of the Ohio University Child Development Center, they also distributed more than 300 children’s books to nursery schools, and, with the help of Katie Zeolie, they provided beds for Hovik, a shelter for homeless orphans.
