IPAC grant brings mental health consultations to preschools

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Rural Health Policy awarded $375,000 to the local children’s mental health network, Integrating Professionals for Appalachian Children (IPAC). According to Jane Hamel-Lambert, Ph.D., IPAC president and director of interdisciplinary mental health education, the grant will fund early childhood mental health consultations in public preschool classrooms and the implementation of a workforce development initiative.

Ohio child safety seat law changes

New state regulations mandate that children under eight years of age and/or shorter than 4 feet 9 inches must ride in a child safety seat. The new regulations take effect Oct. 7, 2009, but the law provides a warning period through April 2010.

According to Mary McPherson, CHP nurse coordinator, OU-COM’s Ohio Buckles Buckeye Care Seat Program will help community members comply by offering a limited number of child safety seats for only $5 to WIC-income eligible individuals in Athens County who have no other means of acquiring a child safety seat.

Spring ARC construction update

Spring has arrived and, with it, more than 40 bricklayers. After pausing on exterior work for the winter months, workers are now covering the Academic & Research Center’s (ARC) rosy pink insulation board with Ohio University’s signature brickwork. As of mid-April, the eastern exterior wall was almost finished, and workers began installing decorative stone molding.

Construction remains on schedule with completion expected by Oct. 1, reported project manager Dick Planisek.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: DON'T FEAR SILENCE!

Students will eventually talk. While we may think the silence is long, students need time to process your questions and to come up with answers. Give them a chance to think and they will eventually talk. In fact, you may want to silently count slowly to 10 or 15 to force yourself to wait enough time for students to think and respond.

Find more “Teaching Tips” at your OU-COM & CORE faculty development Web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm or www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm.

(If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit. (Tidbits courtesy of your office of faculty development with Steve Davis, Ph.D., Robbin Kirkland, Ph.D., and Olivia Sheehan, Ph.D.)
