New student research award announced
The Office of Medical Development announces the establishment of the Sybert Family Orthopaedic Research Award. The award, which provides up to $5,000 to an OU-COM student each year, is designed to promote osteopathic student research in the field of orthopedics.
Funding for the award was provided by Daryl Sybert, D.O. (’86), FAOAO, clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the Mt. Carmel New Albany Surgery Hospital.
Paul Eichenseer, OMS I, is the award’s first recipient. Eichenseer conducts research on spino-pelvic biomechanics with a particular interest in sacroiliac joint mechanics. He is mentored by Sybert as well as Brian Clark, Ph.D., assistant professor of neuromuscular biology, and John Cotton, Ph.D., of the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. Eichenseer received his bachelor’s degree in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University in 2006, and he worked as a research associate at the Ohio State University prior to beginning at OU-COM.
Federal grant funds fossil preparation at OU-COM
Nancy Stevens, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical sciences at OU-COM, was recently awarded a grant for $180,000 from the National Science Foundation to fund the creation of a university laboratory for fossil preparation and imaging.
“Having an in-house specimen preparation facility removes the most significant obstacle to my research productivity: the cost and delay of off-site specimen preparation,” Stevens says.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Faculty Development Tidbit:
Hidden Curriculum
Within every learning encounter, there is an explicit curriculum that students are marked on and an implicit curriculum that students may not be told about directly. Frequently this hidden curriculum revolves around how the instructor expects students to behave or think, and it often affects how the instructor judges or evaluates them. Here are some related points to keep in mind:
· Unintentional Role Modeling: Students watch us for clues about our professional and personal preferences. Never model behaviors you would not want students to emulate, such as mistreatment of staff, prejudice against or neglect of certain types of patients, or disrespect for colleagues or students.
· Positive Feedback: If you want students to develop the right professional habits, you should let them know when they are performing well, and give them opportunities to correct their behavior when they are not. Listen to a podcast (5 min.) about the hidden curriculum.
