College prepares for H1N1

Preparations are underway at OU-COM to address issues surrounding a possible H1N1 influenza outbreak.

Dean Jack Brose, D.O., has asked the Offices of Human Resources, Community Services and Academic Affairs, as well as the Curriculum Advisory Committee and University Medical Associates to develop procedures and plans for the college in case the flu season hits particularly hard this year. The various college units may address issues surrounding faculty, staff and student absenteeism and the impact this may have on academics, clinics and college operations.

The university has a pandemic influenza response plan in place, which is guided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for institutions of higher education. Recent updates to these recommendations are currently being reviewed by the university, along with continued planning with county health officials. For more information about H1N1, preventive measures, the university plan, and more, please visit the university web page at www.ohio.edu/h1n1/.

All faculty, staff and students are asked to take preventive measures, including the following:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Call for posters on international work abroad, research

If you've conducted research or clinical work abroad, there’s an opportunity at the AOA’s 2009 Osteopathic Medical Conference & Exposition (Nov. 1-5, in New Orleans) to share your experience with the osteopathic profession and to win a research award.

The conference and expo features the 11th Annual International Seminar, “Redefining Osteopathic Medicine Globally.” Co-hosted by the AOA Bureau of International Osteopathic Medical Education and Affairs and the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA), the poster session and competition will be held on Sunday, Nov. 1, and will focus on the international medical experiences of D.O.s and osteopathic medical students.

Presentations can highlight research, training, volunteer work or any other medicine-related efforts done overseas.

Poster presentation applications and abstracts (500-word maximum) must be submitted no later than Friday, Sept. 23, 2009, to Josh Kerr via fax at 312.202.8496 or e-mail jkerr@osteopathic.org

While the poster session is open to anyone, there will be a competition exclusive to SOMA student members.

For information on the poster session and competition, visit DO-Online or contact Josh Kerr (contact info. above).

Last year, OU-COM students Catalina Soto, OMS III, Kimberly Jackson, OMS IV, and Amy Zidron, Ph.D., OMS IV, captured first through third places, respectively, in the competition.
