Research Day awards: From sun screen dangers to diabetes care
It’s a hot, sunny day with no clouds in sight. But before you race outside, don’t forget to lather on the sun block—right?
According to Lisa Martorano, OMS I, award-winning presenter at the eighth annual Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) Research Day, held last Friday, some sunscreens may actually harm human skin cells.
The study, which won the $200 prize in the category of basic science research, examined the effects of zinc oxide-based sunscreens.
Projects were in one of three groups: two for basic science research and one for clinical research. In addition to Martorano’s poster, two other OU-COM student projects won awards. Tara Edwards, OMS II, won the other basic science award for her project on the Coxsackie virus of the pancreas and its relation to diabetes, and Kim Phan, OMS II, won the clinical research award for her study on continuing glucose monitoring of rural ICU patients.

Blood drive to honor Adam Jolley
OU-COM, in conjunction with Ohio Athletics, will host a blood drive Monday, Sept. 28, from noon to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The annual OU-COM Welcome Back Blood Drive this year will be held in memory of Adam Jolley.
Adam, age 16, son of OU-COM Accounting Specialist Greg Jolley and Kristina Hoisington Jolley, died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on July 2. Adam had completed his sophomore year at Alexander High School and had plans to attend Tri-County Joint Vocational School in August to study auto mechanics.
Because blood donations in Central Ohio have declined this month, the local supply currently is more than 320 pints below sufficient levels. Blood types most urgently needed include O-negative, A-negative and B-negative.
To make an appointment to donate in Adam’s memory, call 593.2274, or e-mail donatebloodathens@yahoo.com.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Faculty Development Tidbit: Critical thinking questions
Ask your students “Why…?,” “How…?,” “If…?,” and “What else?” questions to strengthen their comprehension of the issues or skills at hand. Use Bloom’s Taxonomy as a basis for your questioning and watch your students meet the objectives you set out at the beginning of the lesson.
