OU-COM ranked among top schools for graduating rural physicians
The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine was ranked as one of the top U.S. medical schools for producing graduates who choose to practice in rural areas.
In the study, published in the April issue of American Medicine, OU-COM tied for 11th place among all medical schools in the country granting the M.D. or D.O. degree. The greatest percentage of our alumni practicing in rural areas graduated between 1988 and 1997.
According to the study, 21 percent of OU-COM alumni were providing medical services in rural areas in 2005, the year the data was collected.
The article, written by a team from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, examined the training of the U.S. rural physician workforce to better understand the disparities between rural and urban physicians.

Holt receives top honor at DOC awards
Rachel Holt, OMS IV, received the Student D.O. of the Year award last week during the annual Distinguished Osteopathic Commitment ceremony.
“I was not at all expecting to be honored in such a big way. I feel very privileged to be recognized by my fellow students and faculty at OU-COM,” Holt said.
Among Rachel’s passions is research. As an undergraduate at Taylor University in Upland, Ind., she investigated the innervation of the circulatory system in rats.
At OU-COM, she completed a Research and Scholarly Advancement Fellowship with research mentor Jay Shubrook, D.O., associate professor of family medicine, for which she studied diabetes care in nursing homes.
“The CORE Research Office is very proud of Rachel’s achievements,” said Grace Brannan, Ph.D., director of the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) Research Office.
“We have worked closely with Rachel these past five years on numerous research projects. Rachel’s passion for patient care and safety are reflected in the studies she has done in the areas of diabetes and exercise stress testing. Her enthusiasm, energy, and evidence-based knowledge will surely make her an outstanding osteopathic physician,” Brannan said.
A complete list of DOC winners will be posted on the OU-COM web site this week.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Series offers caregivers information, support
During May 2010, the OU-COM Department of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology will offer its annual Caregiver Series at the Athens Public Library, with support from the Case Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center.
The annual series addresses concerns and issues faced by caregivers of all ages and circumstances. Although each caregiver’s circumstance is unique, most caregivers share one common thread: feeling isolated or ill-prepared to take on the caregiver role.
This program can help caregivers become more knowledgeable and connect with others in similar situations. Presentations will be held each Wednesday afternoon in May at the Athens County Public Library, which sponsors the series along with the Ohio University College of Health and Human Services.
Refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m., and the hour-long presentations will begin at 3:45, followed by more socializing and refreshments until 5 p.m. The series is free and open to the public.
Respite care (in-home coverage) is available on a limited basis. For more information on that, contact Brooke Hallowell, Ph.D., director of the OU School of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences, at 593.1356.
See the calendar item below for the schedule of presentation topics.
