University transfers student health services to OU-COM, UMA

Ohio University students can expect positive changes in their health care on the Athens campus this year.

OU-COM and the Ohio University Division of Student Affairs announced that the college will oversee student health services beginning Aug. 12, 2010. Student health services were previously aligned with the Division of Student Affairs.
OU-COM will contract with University Medical Associates, Inc. (UMA), the not-for-profit health care organization and faculty practice plan of OU-COM’s clinical faculty, to provide day-to-day administration and staffing for student health care services.

Ohio University’s research licensing income rises to $8.2 million

Ohio University reported $8.2 million in income from its research technologies in fiscal year 2010, the majority of which can be traced to a discovery made by OU-COM faculty researchers, led by John Kopchick, Ph.D., Goll-Ohio Eminent Scholar and professor of molecular and cellular biology.

The university received more than $8 million from the Pfizer corporation from a license for a growth hormone antagonist, discovered by Kopchick and his team at the Edison Biotechnology Institute. This discovery became the basis for the drug Somavert®. The drug is used for patients with acromegaly, a form of gigantism that affects 40,000 people worldwide.

Three receive Phillips Medal of Public Service

Three individuals received Phillips Medals of Public Service, OU-COM’s highest honor, at the 35th annual Convocation Ceremony held Saturday, Aug. 14, at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

This year’s recipients included John Kopchick, Ph.D., Goll-Ohio Eminent Scholar and professor of molecular and cellular biology; David Scholl, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Diagnostic Hybrids, Inc., and senior vice president of operations for Quidel, Inc.; and John Haseley, former chief of staff to Gov. Ted Strickland.

Both Scholl and Haseley are Ohio University alumni. Kopchick delivered the keynote address at this year’s ceremony. A story about this year’s ceremony, and more information about the medal winners, will be posted later today on the OU-COM web site.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty development tidbit: Learning how to learn

A teacher who says, "This is how we approach a problem in our discipline" or, "This is how I would go about answering this question," demonstrates a learning process to students. Often it isn't even necessary to provide an answer to a problem – students can work those out themselves – but it does help to demonstrate techniques for problem-solving, show how topics relate and give tips on how to organize information. This way, they learn more than information; they learn how to learn.

Find more tips at your OU-COM & CORE faculty development web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm  or  www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm.  If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
