New study published on ancient “terror birds”
An international team of scientists published a new study this week in the online, open-access journal PLoS ONE on the predatory style of ancient flightless birds. These phorusrhacids, more popularly called “terror birds,” evolved about 60 million years ago in South America.
Lawrence Witmer, Ph. D., professor of anatomy, co-authored an article about a predatory style of ancient flightless birds, popularly referred to as “terror birds,” which was released last week in the online, open-access journal PLoS ONE. The research was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The study is the most comprehensive biochemical analysis of the terror bird to date and looks at the predatory style of the mid-sized Andalgalornis bird, which stood about 4.5 feet tall and weighed an average of 90 pounds. Although they couldn’t fly, these birds are unique because they evolved a very rigid skull that they used in an attack and retreat method similar to Muhammad Ali’s boxing style.

ID badges provide access to OU-COM buildings
Beth Maxon, director of human resources and administrative services reminds all faculty, staff and students to wear and display OU-COM ID badges in an easily visible location while on the college campus. (OU-COM Policy #3.10 - http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/policy/HumanResources/3.10%20identification%20system.htm)
Although the badges also provide access to doors in Grosvenor Hall, Grosvenor West and the Academic & Research Center (ARC), continue to carry your OU identification card, Maxon said. The OU-COM and OU ID badge magnetic strips are the same, and both can be used to enter the buildings after hours and on weekends:
· Grosvenor Hall ground floor (near employee lounge)
· Grosvenor Hall 1st floor (entrance from Convocation Center – near Tech Shop)
· Grosvenor West 1st floor (entrance from Irvine Hall – near Learning Resources Center)
· Academic Research Center (outside entrances, entrance from Irvine Hall, service elevators to 2nd and 3rd floor, and doors to secure lab areas on 2nd and 3rd floors).
Report lost or defaced badges immediately to OU-COM Human Resources Office or Becky Vinson, Grosvenor 324, at Vinson@ohio.edu or 593-2538.
