Military students receive commissions

Three first-year OU-COM students recently took their oath of office to accept commissions in the United States military. Brandon Dugar and Carrie Dunham took the oath to join the Navy, and Lucas Vannoy took the oath to become a member of the Army. “These are very competitive scholarships among students from across the country, and it takes a lot of persistence and energy to complete the process,” said Steve Davis, Ph.D., director of faculty development and advisor to the student organization Association of Military Physicians and Surgeons.

Grosvenor Hall renovations to impact access

Continuing work on the new Clinical Training and Assessment Center in Grosvenor Hall this month will impact use of student lockers and accessibility to the building’s ground floor.

Beginning Friday, Dec. 17, at 5 p.m., the entire ground floor of Grosvenor Hall will close for the work, and will not reopen until Wednesday, Dec. 22. The building will still be accessible by normal entry onto the first floor, and elevators will be operational but closed off to ground floor entry during that time, said Robin Faires, AUID, project manager for the renovation work.

Join your colleagues for holiday food drive
Please join OU-COM in making the holidays a bit brighter for some area families who are in need. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to join this college-wide holiday food drive, the proceeds of which go to support the Diabetes Free Clinic patients.
During this year’s WinterBlast, Wednesday, Dec. 15, non-perishable food will be collected; the food will be distributed as part of the Diabetes Free Clinic monthly food distributions to those patients in need of food assistance.
Items such as canned goods, especially those that are high in protein and sugar-free, will be accepted. Cash donations to support the purchase of additional food will also be accepted.
Last year, staff members of the college’s offices of admissions, student affairs, medical development and alumni affairs, research and grants, institutional assessment, and communication collected nearly 300 pounds of boxed and canned goods for the Athens County Food Bank. This year, those departments will join the rest of the college, including students, to collect food for Diabetes Free Clinic patients.

A non-perishable food wish list containing diabetes appropriate choices include: peanut butter, canned tuna (in water), dried beans, peas, lentils, whole grain pasta, hot and cold cereals (unsweetened), 100% fruit juice, canned fruit (in water or juice), unsweetened applesauce, canned tomato products (low sodium and regular), salsa, canned beans and vegetables, chicken broth (low fat, low sodium), olive oil/canola oil, sugar free pudding or gelatin mixes, V-8 juice (low sodium), sugar free instant breakfast drink mix.

Winter weather policy reminder

With the arrival of winter weather, OU-COM faculty, staff and students are reminded about University Policy 40.051, which provides that only the president or his designee has the authority to officially close the university. As in the past, if the Athens County Sheriff declares a level 3 emergency, the Athens campus of the university will close, including OU-COM.
