OU-COM organizing Haitian medical assistance

OU-COM is putting together a team or teams of physicians and nurses to travel to Haiti and provide medical care in conjunction with an established organization. If you are interested in going, contact Gillian Ice, Ph.D., associate professor of social medicine; David Drozek, D.O. (’83), assistant professor of surgery; or Joanne Bray, M.S.N., director of clinical competency assessment.

As details develop, they will be sent to participants. Target dates have not been determined, but they likely fall between February 20 and March 6.

If you have other opportunities, please do not forgo joining other organizations.

The college is also raising funds to support Haiti relief. Checks should be made out to the Ohio University Foundation and sent to Sharon Zimmerman M.P.A., director of medical development and executive director of alumni affairs. Label checks with “For Haiti relief.” Funds will be used for supplies, team travel expenses or other organizational needs.

OU-COM team publishes study on childhood obesity in Athens County
A study conducted by researchers from OU-COM found that 21 percent of children in Athens County are obese, compared to the national average of 16 percent. The study was printed this fall in the international publication, Journal of Rural and Remote Health.
The research team included Karen Montgomery-Reagan, D.O., assistant professor of pediatrics and University Medical Associates pediatrician; Joseph Bianco, Ph.D., research scientist in the Department of Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology; Jean Rettos, D.O. (’04), Rebecca Huston, D.O. (’04), and Victor Heh, Ph.D., biostatistician in the Office of Research and Grants.

Please share your vision of OU-COM’s future

Faculty, staff and students have additional opportunities to offer their suggestions, comments and vision for the college’s strategic planning initiative, OU-COM 2020: Envisioning Our Future. An evening open forum will be held tomorrow, Jan. 26, available by videoconference for CORE participants.

If you do not attend the forum, you can still contribute ideas by giving your input to a subcommittee group member (find the list of subcommittee chairs and members here: www.oucom.ohio.edu/2020/), providing comments online at www.oucom.ohio.edu/2020/, or adding your thoughts to the first draft of OU-COM 2020, to be circulated in February.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: The teacher as model

The enthusiasm and values of the teacher have much to do with your students’ interest in the subject matter. Your nonverbal communication is just as important as what you say. Simply feeling that you value the subject matter and care about their learning influences your facial expressions, level of animation and vocal intensity, which can motivate student learning.

Find more “Tips” at your OU-COM & CORE faculty development web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm or www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm.  If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
