Brian Clark receives federal research grant

Brian Clark, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology and director of the Institute for Neuromusculoskeletal Research, recently received a $426,000 research grant from the Department of Health and Human Services.

In his grant-funded project, “Intracortical Mechanisms of Muscle Weakness,” Clark and his team investigate muscle weakness related to aging and disuse. They utilize transcranial magnetic stimulation, a non-invasive method of exciting neurons in the brain, to examine the part of the brain that controls our limb muscles.

“Aging-related muscle weakness limits independence and contributes to the development of age-related disabilities,” Clark said. “We hope to better understand the physiology behind loss of muscle strength, in order to contribute to the development of better treatments and rehabilitation methods that promote healthy muscle function.”

The grant will help cover the cost of three faculty salaries at Ohio University, and one or two full-time research technicians for three years. Clark will work with two faculty co-investigators from the Ohio University School of Physical Therapy.

“Dr. Clark’s achievement reflects a strong college effort to increase NIH research funding. His award marks the fifth grant received by our faculty as a result of federal stimulus (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) funds,” said Dean Jack Brose, D.O.  “I am very proud of the outstanding research conducted by Dr. Clark and his colleagues in the Institute for Neuromusculoskeletal Research.”

OU-COM alumnus becomes university trustee

Kevin B. Lake, D.O. (’92), was recently appointed to a nine-year term on the Ohio University Board of Trustees by Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland. He replaces Athens businessman Larry Schey on the board.

Lake’s appointment became effective with the board’s June 24-25 meetings in Athens.

A full-time senior attending physician in family practice, Lake serves as medical director of Cardinal Medical Group, LLC. He is board-certified in family practice and osteopathic manipulative treatment by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: Using digital learning resources

Developing content for your course takes time. And with the wealth of new digital learning resources, you may want to consider learning a new skill to adapt or develop new content.

Even researching the resources out there takes time. Let alone assessing their usefulness and relevance. It’s important to strategize: establish a personal list of priorities before you begin evaluating content possibilities.

Here is a selection of criteria we suggest. Rearrange these criteria into an order that reflects your priorities.

Find more tips at your OU-COM & CORE faculty development web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm  or  www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm.  If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
