Countdown to Commencement

You’re almost D.O.s! For Saturday’s Commencement to unfold as smoothly as possible, 2010 graduates must attend the following:

1.    Commencement review, money management session and distribution of caps and gowns, Friday, June 4, 1-3 p.m., Irvine 194.

2.    Assembly of graduates, mentors and faculty on Saturday, June 5. Graduates must meet at Galbreath Chapel at 8:30 a.m.

A reminder for those attending Commencement: A reception will be held in honor of the new graduates at the Baker University Center Ballroom immediately after the ceremony. To avoid ticketing and towing, we recommend that those attending park in the Convocation Center parking lot. A shuttle bus will run from Grosvenor Hall to the auditorium from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., prior to the ceremony. Following the ceremony, it will run from the auditorium to Baker Center and Grosvenor Hall until 2:30 p.m.

Check out the event web site for information about weekend activities, events, maps and guides:

Faculty member receives Osteopathic Spirit Award

David C. Eland, D.O., F.A.O.O., professor of osteopathic manipulative, received the 2010-2011 Osteopathic Spirit Award from the Ohio Osteopathic Association.

His nomination for the award came from outside the field of medicine. Madeleine Scott, director of the Ohio University School of Dance, called Eland a “true ambassador” for osteopathic medicine in her nomination letter, noting the free osteopathic manipulative therapy that Eland has provided to dancers at the school since 1995.

Established in 2004 and presented by the Advocates for the Ohio Osteopathic Association (AOOA), the Osteopathic Spirit Award honors individuals who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to the osteopathic profession.

ARC café to close during summer; other options available

The OU-COM Society of Alumni and Friends Café in the ARC will close for the summer on Friday, June 11, at 2 p.m. The café will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 7.

The ARC will otherwise remain open over the summer, with project team rooms available for student use. That vending area offers a variety of snacks and drinks, including a Taylor & Byrnes Gourmet Coffee Shoppe dispenser that sells nearly a dozen types of gourmet coffees and hot chocolate.

Ohio University Dining Services would like to remind faculty, staff and students that Baker West 82 and the Front Room will remain open during the summer.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit:  Engaging students in large lecture

Tom Hemmick, Ph.D., SUNY Stony Brook physicist, uses a number of strategies to make his lectures more engaging.

One is simple eye contact—catching the eyes of students who are not paying attention. Once he gets their attention, he uses it to determine if students are grasping the material. Some students show through body language or behavior that they do not understand the material, and this, too, can help monitor the class.

Another is enthusiasm. Hemmick consciously demonstrates his passion for his field by varying the pace, tone and volume of his voice during a class. He tells stories, asks questions and encourages discussion.

Hemmick uses humor to lighten the classroom and re-capture attention. He even suggests that faculty members get some formal or informal training in the performing arts. He finds that gestures, inflection and movement around the “stage” and into the “audience” all help create and maintain a connection with students.

Hemmick uses his mistakes as opportunities for teaching, since students tend to remember those events. He readily admits when doesn’t know an answer and attempts to work out solutions with the students.

View a 29 minute video, and pay attention to the above points (eye contact, storytelling, pace, tone, humor, gesturing, etc.): https://tlt.stonybrook.edu/FacultyServices/IiE/Lists/Show%20List/DispForm.aspx?ID=17.
