NEWS
Congratulations, you’re a mother—and a doctor!
The OU-COM family grew by one on Commencement day, Saturday, June 5. Read about Lisa Clayton, D.O. (’10), whose firstborn arrived at the same time as her medical school diploma.
West Green improvement projects impact OU-COM buildings this summer
Ohio University will shut down the Lausche Heating Plant between now and Sunday, June 27, for maintenance. This will result in no hot water service in all West Green buildings and no steam service to autoclaves in Irvine Hall and the Life Sciences building during this time.
The steam and hot water outage will not affect the cooling of West Green Buildings.
On Saturday, June 26, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., a power outage will affect Parks Hall, Grosvenor Hall and Grosvenor West in order to connect a new electrical substation to the university electrical systems. Emergency power will be operating during the outage, so any devices connected to those outlets will have power.
As reported last week, the West Green courtyard and commons (pedestrian area bounded by Stocker Center and Irvine, James, Wilson and Sargent Halls) will be closed Monday, June 21, through Wednesday, Sept. 1.
For pedestrian travel between Grosvenor and Irvine Halls (coming from Grosvenor), either:
· Walk down “the gulch” parking lot next to Grosvenor Hall (a sidewalk begins outside of Parks Hall). Take a right just before Stocker Center. You can enter the basement doors on the west side of Irvine Hall.
· Take the Richland Avenue sidewalk to the stairway north of Treudley Hall (to the left just before the bridge). From there, you can access the doors next to Irvine 194.
Parking is still open at the Convocation Center and in “the gulch” parking lot between Grosvenor Hall and the West Green courtyard and commons. Faculty and staff parking permits are also valid for the parking lot of the Life Sciences Building (Lot 109), accessible via Union and Depot Streets.
To access Irvine from the Life Sciences Building and parking lot 109, either use the doors next to the Irvine Hall loading dock or enter the ARC building and take the covered walkway to Irvine.
The university’s construction project will involve the replacement of all sidewalks, storm drains, sanitary sewers and water lines. Exterior lighting and landscaping also will be enhanced.
ARC café to close during summer; other options available
The OU-COM Society of Alumni and Friends Café is now closed until Tuesday, Sept. 7.
The ARC will otherwise remain open over the summer, with project team rooms available for student use. Vending machines will continue to be available in the enclosed connector between the ARC and Irvine Hall. That vending area offers a variety of snacks and drinks, including a Taylor & Byrnes Gourmet Coffee Shoppe dispenser that sells nearly a dozen types of gourmet coffees and hot chocolate.
Ohio University Dining Services reminds faculty, staff and students that Baker West 82 and the Front Room will remain open during the summer.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Faculty Development Tidbit: The Millennial Generation: Up and Coming
The Millennial Generation, born between 1977 and 1998, include the youngest members of today’s work force. The 75 million members of this generation were raised at the most child-centric time in national history.
Perhaps the high level of parental attention explains why young professionals today tend to display a great deal of self-confidence, sometimes to the point of appearing cocky. Millennials also tend to be team-oriented, preferring group projects to individual endeavors. As you might expect, this group is highly technically literate and good at multitasking.
Millennials seem to expect structure in the workplace. They tend to acknowledge and respect positions and titles, and they want to have a relationship with their boss. This doesn't always mesh with Generation X's love of independence and hands-off style.
Finally, many Millennials are new to the professional workplace. Therefore, these younger Millennials will need mentoring, no matter how smart and confident they appear. They'll respond well to the personal attention. Because they appreciate structure and stability, mentoring Millennials can be more formal, with set meetings.
Challenge these workers, but also provide the structure to back it up. This means breaking down goals into steps and offering necessary resources and information they'll need to meet the challenge.
