Students in the PCC are assessed throughout the quarter and in different ways.  Students should refer to their individual course syllabi for further information and specific percentage weighting of each course component.

Content Examination: to assess content knowledge.  The students will take content exams in the Biomedical Sciences course at the end of the quarter.  The exam may include board-type multiple choice questions, essay, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions.  The questions will be written by various faculty members, both basic scientists and clinicians, and will be based on the common and unique learning issues developed in the small groups.

Facilitator/Self Assessment: to assess the performance, progress, and participation of students in their small group, as part of the Biomedical Science course.  The first evaluation will be primarily to advise students of their progress.  The end of the quarter evaluation will be used for grading purposes.  Evaluations will be in narrative as well as numerical form.  Student self assessments should be completed at the same time as the facilitator assessment.

Component Quizzes: to access specific content and skills.  These are usually administered as a part of basic science labs or problem sets and will be announced and arranged by the individual instructors.

Clinical Examinations: to assess demonstrated clinical and psycho-social skills.  The exams will be performed using simulated patients in the Fundamentals in Clinical Osteopathic Medicine course.  Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine is a component of these exams.

Community and Clinical Experience Assignments: to assess student clinical skills in a clinical and or community health environment for 4 hours each week.

Specifics About the Facilitator/Self Assessment

Students will be evaluated twice a quarter. The first assessment given before midterm will not be counted as part of the actual grade.  Rather, the purpose of the initial assessment during each quarter is to provide feedback to the student, in an effort to point to strengths and reflect on weaknesses. In addition, the student will be completing the same form as a self-assessment.  This will allow the facilitators and the individual students to “compare notes” in a discussion format.

The final assessment, to be completed by facilitators and the students, will be converted into a score with a significant weighting in the final grade to emphasize process in the Biomedical Science course.  The course is recorded on a pass/fail basis.

The following areas are to be assessed via the Facilitator/Self-Assessment process:

  • Participation

  • Preparation

  • Interpersonal Skills

  • Contribution to Group Process

The form includes definitions of the above categories with the ratings based on skills that students actually demonstrate in the group setting.  Both ratings and written comments reflecting strengths and areas needing improvement will be addressed.

Administering the Feedback

Facilitators keep concise records of individual student progress as the cases unfold in the small groups.    Worksheets for this purpose are available in the PCC office.

Facilitators set times for individual feedback sessions with students.  Prior to meeting with students, facilitators discuss the ratings of each student with each other.

Facilitators allot 15-20 minutes for each student session.  Recommendations and action plans, as appropriate, should be clear.  These include explicit directions for the student in setting goals.  Feedback from the student regarding the ratings are encouraged during the discussion.

The mid-quarter assessment does NOT go into the student’s record for evaluation.
