Problem-based learning approaches have two main educational goals:
1.To assist the student with the acquisition of an integrated body of knowledge related to the problem.
2.To assist the student in the development and application of problem-solving skills.

The purposes of the PCC curriculum are to:

1. Promote a more rational approach to osteopathic medical education by:

a.
fostering active learning on the part of the students;

b.
integrating basic and clinical medical sciences throughout the curriculum;

c.
using an instructional approach that is problem-based and student-centered.

2.
Help students develop life-long learning skills.
3. Promote the development of skills (such as problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, group sensitiveness, interpersonal skills, and a holistic approach to clinical reasoning) that will impact the continued professional development of students:
4. Integrate osteopathic medical education from medical school through residency.
5. Emphasize the development of competent osteopathic primary care physicians while giving students the tools they need to enter any postgraduate program.
