The PCC is structured to
promote the integration of basic and clinical sciences throughout the
continuum of patient-centered medical education. Students spend the
first two years on the Athens campus, and last two years of
medical school in the Centers for
Osteopathic Research and Education (COREs).
An active learning approach to basic and clinical sciences in Athens
is augmented by the CORE structure wherein students continue to use
and review basic sciences in the context of advanced clinical
experiences, in conjunction individualized support provided by the site personnel, preceptors, and
attending physicians.
During the first two years, PCC students enroll in three courses:
(a)
Biomedical Sciences, which includes the small group experience,
to
facilitate the learning of basic
sciences and the human body systems; (b) Clinical Sciences, to help students acquire the
fundamentals of clinical practice; and (c)
Introduction to Clinical Osteopathic Medicine
to help students develop their
professional identity as osteopathic physicians through the
introduction of clinical experiences in a variety of medical
environments. The third and fourth years
emphasize the practical experience of osteopathic clinical medicine.
Students rotate through the several medical specialties to acquire
skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to develop a well rounded
background in the clinical sciences.
