The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) clinical group 1 and 2 faculty compensation policy and procedure herein is used as a basis for setting clinical faculty salaries for college activities. It is the intent of OU-COM to maintain a clinical faculty compensation plan that is internally equitable and externally competitive with other medical schools of similar size and location. Department Chairs, in coordination with the Office of Pre-Doctoral Education, are responsible to ensure that the academic schedule is met annually.

This compensation plan applies to clinical faculty with a rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor and who participate in an active clinical practice within University Medical Associates (UMA) or a private practice affiliated by contract. If a clinical faculty member is no longer actively practicing, he/she will not be covered by this compensation plan.  In this case, the academic percentage, FTE, and salary will be reviewed and appropriate levels determined on an individual basis.

Compensation Plan Grid

 A.  The clinical faculty compensation plan grid is calculated based on:

  1. Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) median salary data (standard applied for creating the pay ranges).
  2. 10 half days (40 hours) per week equal 100% dedicated to College didactic and scholarly activities (i.e., one half day (4 hours) equals 10%).  This is referred to as academic percentage.
  3. No individual is higher than 80%.1.0 or .9 FTE (full-time or 40 hours per week) treated the same.

B.  Determination of a clinical faculty salary is dependent on:

  1. Category - Assistant, Associate, and Professor
Years since medical school graduation (starting 3 years after)
Percent dedicated to College didactic and scholarly activities (each half day or 4 hours equals 10%).  See page 3 for detail.  Time dedicated to the College didactics may include, but are not limited to, development of curriculum, teaching in classroom, block teams, advising, committee assignments, etc.
  2. College FTE  - Determines total number of weekly hours dedicated to College activities (i.e., 40 hours is 1.0 or .9 FTE, 30 hours is .75 FTE, 20 hours is .5 FTE, etc.).  Total weekly hours are split based on percent between College didactic/scholarly responsibilities and clinical teaching responsibilities (see page 3 for detail).
  3. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Dean in consultation with the College Executive Committee.

 C.  For compensation to be based on this plan, these factors apply:

  1. Group 1 clinical faculty must maintain 50% or more dedicated to College didactic and scholarly activities and be 1.0 FTE.

  2. Group 2 clinical faculty must maintain 40% or less dedicated to College didactic and scholarly activities and be .9 FTE

  3. Exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the Dean.

Note:  There are a few transition exceptions where a salary falls above the end of the pay range (i.e., faculty with extensive years of College service).

Compensation Pay Plan Evaluation and Structure Movement

The Chief Financial Officer will evaluate the clinical faculty compensation plan annually.  The purpose is to evaluate the plan in terms of effectiveness in achieving objectives, external comparability and internal structure.

The compensation grid will be reviewed annually to determine appropriate compensation plan. Factors that may be considered in determining movement may include local economic climate, raise pool, external and internal elements, and the average of the three most recent years of available compensation data from the MGMA. The MGMA average is based on median total compensation by rank (assistant professor, associate professor, professor) for the clinical designation family practice without obstetrics/gynecology.

 Annual Compensation Increases

Clinical faculty will receive annual compensation increases in accordance with the University Raise Distribution guidelines and the OU-COM Compensation Pool guidelines.

Promotion and Tenure

Clinical faculty will follow University and College policy and procedures for promotion and tenure.  For a clinical faculty member granted a promotion, the salary would increase at the increments designated by the University for promotion increases (i.e., $3500 for assistant to associate, $5000 for associate to professor).  After this increase is applied and if the faculty salary falls below the minimum of the new pay grade, the salary will be increased to equal the minimum.  If the faculty salary is above the maximum of the new pay grade, the base salary will be increased by the total promotion increment.  Note:  A promotion increase is only given once per promotion (i.e., a faculty member cannot receive $3500 for a promotion from assistant to associate as a Group II and then again as a Group I).

 Malpractice

Malpractice assistance is available to physicians practicing in UMA.  This assistance is not available to physicians practicing in affiliated practices.

Based on the percent of time dedicated to College didactic/scholarly activities, the College will cover half of this same percent of the faculty member’s malpractice insurance expense (i.e., if individual is 30% dedicated to College didactic/scholarly activity, then the College pays 15% of malpractice expense).  It is at the discretion of the Dean to cover above the minimum.  Any change in coverage from the previous year will be communicated to clinical faculty by July1.

If the faculty member has an 80% administrative College appointment, then the College will cover 100% of their malpractice insurance expense.
