Effective Date

July 11, 2007

Department

Administrative and Financial Services

Issued by:

Kathy Brooks, COM CFO

Approved by:

John Brose, D.O., Dean

The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) Group I and Group II non-clinical faculty appointment policy and procedure herein is used as a basis for setting new faculty (non-clinical) appointments.   Two options may be considered when proposing and/or recruiting for a non-clinical faculty position.  These two options are for new faculty.  The expectation is that once an option is selected, the faculty member will continue with this type of appointment.  Exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the Dean.

Option 1:

Incoming Group I or II faculty (non-clinical) with a rank of assistant, associate, or professor will be hired on an 11-month appointment.  The 12th month provides an opportunity to obtain a grant-funded month of salary and associated benefits.

During the first two years of employment, OU-HCOM will allocate the equivalent of one month’s salary and benefits each year for research and academic support.  These funds will be transferred to an OU-HCOM account.  The first allocation (equivalent of one month’s salary/benefits) will be transferred in month of hire and the second allocation (equivalent of one month’s salary/benefits) will be transferred at the start of the following fiscal year.  These funds must be expended by the end of the third year of employment.

Option 2:  (On hold, Per Provost Krendl pending Faculty Senate meeting)

Incoming Group I faculty (non-clinical) with a rank of assistant, associate, or professor may be hired on an 11 month appointment and guaranteed an FTE of less than full time (minimum .5 FTE).  The percentage of FTE to be guaranteed from College operating funds would be determined depending on percentage of time OU-HCOM requires the individual for teaching, service, and/or research.   Any remaining FTE percentage, the faculty member may secure outside funding for this effort.  Additionally, the faculty member may secure grant funding for the 12th month for grant activities.  If grant funding is not secured, the faculty member’s salary will be prorated and reduced to the salary associated with the guaranteed percentage of FTE.

Any department chair considering offering “option 2” must submit a written proposal to the Dean with justification for this option and outlining salary package, time and effort requirements for OU-HCOM, applicant’s current and past grant funding, and other pertinent information.  Offer letters must detail guaranteed percentage of FTE and associated expectations for teaching, service and/or research as well as expectations for securing outside funding.
