The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) part time clinical faculty appointment policy and procedure herein is used as a basis for setting part time clinical faculty appointments.   Two options may be considered when proposing and/or recruiting for part time clinical faculty positions.  Exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the Dean.

Option 1:

Part time clinical faculty with a rank of assistant, associate, or professor may be hired as a group III part time appointment (no benefits) and paid an appropriate hourly rate for actual instruction time.  For example, if the course he/she is teaching is scheduled for a 2 hour block (and the hourly rate is $60/hour), the faculty member would be paid $120 for this instruction time.  This payment includes any preparation and travel time.  If the individual is traveling from out of the area, mileage reimbursement may be negotiated.

Note:  The OU Faculty Handbook limits the number of consecutive quarters allowed.  Review plans with OU-COM Human Resources to ensure compliance.

Option 2:

Athens based part time clinical faculty with a rank of assistant, associate, or professor may be hired as a group II less than .9 FTE appointment.  These part time appointments would be for clinical faculty who will be actively involved throughout the year in academic activities (i.e., classroom teaching, facilitating, committees, block teams, etc.) specifically assigned by the department chair.  Assigned workload is to be appropriate for a group II position.

Each year the department chair, in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Pre-Doctoral Education, will evaluate the group II position’s relevance to the curriculum, individual performance, meeting academic responsibilities, and accreditation requirements.

For new clinical faculty with limited or unknown time commitments, he/she may first be hired as a group III (option 1).  After the first year, the department chair will review their activities and may request to the Dean to move their position to a group II (option 2).
