OHIO UNIVERSITY-COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE
I. Background
“Research projects of faculty and medical students in which there are human subjects as participants must be approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) before the project can begin.” http://www.ohiou.edu/research/compliance/
Likewise any “research by faculty or medical students that involves vertebrate animals at Ohio University must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)” to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act (Public Law 89-544) and the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.” http://www.ohiou.edu/research/compliance/
These requirements apply for any OU-COM project, whether it is internally funded or is a proposal for external funding.
II. Procedure for Research Projects through IRB or IACUC
In order to assure that OU-COM Office of Research and Grants is aware of research projects intended for review by the Institutional Review Board or the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the College will require that a checklist (click on link to access checklist) be attached to all OU-COM proposals that are submitted to the Institutional Review Board or the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. OU-COM faculty or staff research projects must have the checklist (click on link to access checklist) signed by one of the persons listed: Associate Dean for Research or the Director of Clinical Research or the Research and Scholarly Affairs Chair. CORE-initiated projects must be signed by the CORE Research Director. The policy is to ensure that the College is aware of proposals to be submitted to the Institutional Review Board or the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
