OU-COM faculty and staff members who submit a research grant application directly through the College of Osteopathic Medicine and who are awarded external funding with sufficient associated indirect costs (see below) will receive salary bonuses for the time period of the grant award.  The annual amount of the salary bonus will be calculated as 6.38% of the total indirect costs paid to Ohio University by the granting agency in the applicable fiscal year.  Annual indirect costs of at least $1,567 (resulting in a minimum salary bonus of $100) are required in order to earn an award.  When multiple investigators are listed on the grant award, the salary bonus will be apportioned among the investigators according to the % effort listed for each investigator on the Ohio University transmittal form.  Recipients of grants submitted through centers and institutes are not eligible for this bonus.

When a salary bonus is awarded, the department/unit of each awardee will provide 50% of the bonus from its share of the indirect costs.  The College’s Research Incentive account will cover the remaining 50% from its share of the distributed indirect costs.

Awardees will receive the salary bonus at the end of each fiscal year during which indirect cost payments received by the university.  Bonuses will NOT be added to the base salary of grant recipients.  The maximum bonus that an individual can receive for a single fiscal year from all of his/her research grants is limited to $10,000.00

Example: Faculty members Y and Z submitted a 5-year proposal to NIH with a budget of $500,000 in direct costs and $235,000 in indirect costs (at the federal rate of 47%) for a total grant budget of $735,000.  On the OU transmittal form faculty member Y was responsible for 80% and faculty member Z for 20% of the effort on this proposal.  The grant was funded with a starting date of August. 2005.  At the close of the fiscal year, (June 30, 2006), indirect cost payments of $40,000 were received by Ohio University from NIH.  The annual salary bonus for fiscal year 2005-2006 is $2,522 (6.38% of $40,000), with faculty member Y receiving $2,041 and faculty member Z receiving $510.  Salary bonuses will be added to the September paycheck.  At the conclusion of the grant, if all funds were expended, faculty members Y and Z will have received total salary bonuses of $11,994 and $2,999, respectively, over the period of the grant.

This policy will take effect immediately for all research grants and contracts awarded on or after July 1, 2004.
