Ohio University was founded in 1804, making it the oldest university
in the Northwest Territory. The College of Osteopathic Medicine
(OU-COM) was established in 1975 and is one of ten colleges within
the university. The mission of OU-COM is to educate students to
become physicians practicing osteopathic medicine in service to
communities within the Appalachian region. Fifty-five percent of OU-COM graduates
practice in primary care, the highest percentage of any medical
school in Ohio. |

| In 2004, OU-COM was awarded a
two-year planning grant from the National Library of Medicine’s
Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems program to
establish the Appalachian Regional Informatics Consortium (ARIC).
Since that time, OU-COM and its health care partners in
southeastern Ohio have worked to improve rural
health care quality by planning for a comprehensive
community-based health information system.
ARIC continues to work towards this goal by identifying ways to
incorporate health information technologies into rural health care.
In the fall of 2006, OU-COM was awarded a grant from the Appalachian
Regional Commission to develop an Electronic Data Interchange to
facilitate the secure exchange of patient records.
OU-COM has also facilitated the development of the Appalachian
Health Information Exchange (AHIE), the rural RHIO for
southeastern Ohio.

The
Ohio Department of Health, Primary Care and Rural Health Program has
housed Ohio’s State Office of Rural Health (SORH) since SORH’s
inception in late 1991. The goal of the SORH program is to help
strengthen rural health care delivery systems by creating a focal
point for coordinating rural health initiatives statewide. The
program provides an institutional framework that links small rural
communities with state and federal resources to develop long-term
solutions to rural health problems.
The mission of Ohio’s SORH is to work collaboratively with both
internal and external partners to improve rural health systems
statewide. The program’s goals include: (1) to collect and
disseminate relevant rural health information; (2) to coordinate
rural health resources and activities statewide; (3) to provide
technical assistance that meets the health care needs of rural
communities and providers; (4) to encourage the recruitment and
retention of health professionals in rural areas; and (5) to
strengthen state and federal rural health partnerships. Much of the
activity of the SORH in Ohio focuses around statewide educational
opportunities, including an annual statewide rural health
conference.
