Required Clothing and Equipment

Your first quarter as a Year I medical student will present you with opportunities to expand your knowledge base in a variety of educational environments, including both clinical and classroom settings. To maximize these learning experiences, we ask that you purchase the following items.

Please note:

Some OU-HCOM student organizations sponsor equipment sales at the beginning of fall quarter. Many items will be available for a reduced price through these sales, so it is suggested that you wait to purchase these items until your arrival in the fall.

Required clothing and equipment vary by course. Refer to the syllabi to indentify requirements for each course.

Medical Equipment

Required:  In order to participate in clinical skills activities and clinical and community experiences, the following equipment is required.  Without this equipment, you will be asked to leave the educational experience.
  1. Binaural stethoscope, with diaphragm and bell - cost: $50 to$150*

  2. Short White "Clinical Jacket" for labs and Clinical and Community Experiences (CCE); Please purchase only one of these jackets. You will receive a clinical jacket courtesy of the Ohio Osteopathic Association at the White Coat Ceremony at Convocation.

  3. Diagnostic set (otoscope and ophthalmoscope) - cost: $300*; Consider transilluminator and nasal speculum attachments.

  4. Sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) - cost: $70 to $90*

  5. Percussion hammer - cost: $4*; although "neurologic" models may include a brush and a pin in the handle, a basic "rubber mallet" will suffice initially

  6. Tuning fork for hearing test (265 Hz) - cost: $6*

Optional:

  1. A traditional "little black bag" (color is optional) to serve as a container for the equipment -cost: $25 to $100*

* Please note, these costs estimates are approximate. Actual retail vendor prices may vary considerably.

Laboratory Equipment (Gross Anatomy)

You will need the following equipment prior to your first day of classes. Follett's Bookstore in Athens has been asked to stock these items by late July.

  1. Metal scalpel handle (#4) and blades (#20, 21, 22, or 23)

  2. Blunt probe with angular tip

  3. Dissecting scissors, straight, blunt, and/or sharp points, 5 ½ inches in length

  4. Plain thumb forceps, broad point, 4 ½ inches in length,or hemostat/lock forceps

  5. Long white lab coat or scrubs (many students keep an OLD pair of shoes to wear in lab)

  6. Nitrile (not latex) exam gloves (available in boxes of 100)
Note: Students with hair that hangs below their ears will need to use rubber bands, headbands, barrettes, etc. to keep their hair under control and out of the way.

You may already own equipment, or have the knowledge, confidence and opportunity to make independent purchases of these items before you arrive. However, in the event that you do not, many of the OU-HCOM Student Organizations offer equipment sales in the summer and fall. Although the College does not endorse any student group or equipment manufacturer, such events are permitted as educational opportunities and allow students to purchase equipment at a favorable rate.
