2013 Senior Awards and Criteria

It is time to select graduating seniors who are to be honored at graduation on Saturday, May 11, 2013.

Nominations are being solicited from all CORE Assistant Deans, all CORE Administrators, Senior Administrators, Pre-Clinical Faculty and Clinical Faculty.

Please take the time to review the criteria below for these awards and seriously consider graduates who are worthy of recognition.

To make a nomination, review the award criteria then complete the attached nomination form. Make sure to select the name of the award on the form. We will only accept nominations sent via this web page. Paper copies will not be accepted.

When sending your nomination forward, the following level of standards should be kept in mind: Academic achievement, community involvement, peer mentoring, honors rotations, exemplary clinical performance evaluations, research projects, publications, case-based papers, good standing status as well as punctuality and attendance, positive attitude toward challenge and professional behavior.

Please submit your nomination forms no later than Monday, February 4.

 

Best Case-Based Paper Award

The Case-Based Paper Award is presented annually to a graduating medical student whose case-based paper is selected as the best throughout the CORE. All required case-based papers are submitted by students at their CORE sites and will be forwarded to the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education for review and coordination for selection. The student who has written the best paper becomes the award recipient.

Biomedical Sciences Award

Presented to a graduating student for superior performance in research in basic and applied biomedical sciences. The departmental merit evaluation committee will evaluate the nominations and then provide a ranked recommendation of qualified students to the department chair for final selection. Nomination form 

CORE Site Outstanding Student

Presented to the outstanding graduating OU-HCOM student based at each fully participating hospital in the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) system. Final selection is made by the CORE Assistant Dean and CORE Administrator (with input from the Director of Medical Education, Medical  Education Coordinator, Program Directors and Chief Residents).  Factors and characteristics taken into consideration when determining appropriate recipients for this award include, but are not limited to the following:

Academic achievement, community involvement, peer mentoring, honors rotations, exemplary clinical performance evaluations, research projects, publications, case-based papers, good standing status as well as punctuality and attendance, positive attitude toward challenge and professional behavior. Dean's Award

Presented to a graduating student who displays exceptional character in personal and professional conduct, maintains superior performance in the classroom and clinic, and shows unusual promise of future contributions to the profession of osteopathic medicine. Nomination form

Family Practice Award

Presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding performance in classroom and clinical activities related to family practice and who shows the greatest promise of future success as a family practitioner. Final selection is made by the chairperson of the Department of Family Medicine. Nomination form

Global Health Award

Presented at graduation to a student who demonstrates knowledge of the principles of global health, who is involved in improving the lives of others through public health and other international activities, and/or dedicated to moving the field of global health education forward.  Nomination form

Obstetrics and Gynecology Award

Presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated a keen interest and outstanding performance in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Final selection is made by the chairperson of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. Nomination form

Ohio Department of Aging Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology Award

Presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding interest in geriatrics/gerontology and exceptional aptitude clinically and osteopathically with the geriatric patient. The individual shows great promise as a future geriatrician. Final selection is made by the chairperson of the Department of Geriatric Medicine. Nomination form

Osteopathic Heritage Award

Presented to a graduating student for excellence in leadership, professional involvement and commitment to osteopathic principles. The selected student will also show exceptional interest in osteopathic manipulative treatment. Nomination form

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Award

Presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding capacity to promote and integrate Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) in the classroom and clinical settings and who show the greatest promise of future success integrating OMM in Osteopathic care.  Nomination form 

Outstanding Research Award 

Presented to a graduating OU-HCOM student who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to research during his/her medical training and evidence of scholarly contribution through presentation and/or publication. Final selection will be made by an evaluation committee organized by the OU-HCOM Office of Research & Grants. Nomination form

Pediatrics Award

Presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding performance in classroom and clinical activities related to pediatrics. The selected student should be one that has expressed a desire and shows promise in seeking a career in the practice of pediatrics. Final selection is made by the chairperson of the Pediatrics Department. Nomination form

Social Medicine Award

The Social Medicine Award is given annually to a graduating medical student whose work best displays the multi-faceted mission of the Department of Social Medicine.

Students will be selected for the award based on their exceptional knowledge of and commitment to any of the following areas, as evidenced by their involvement in community activities, health advocacy and/or research:

Public Health

Preventive Medicine

Community Health

Medical Ethics

Health Policy

Cultural Competency in health and health care

Empathy toward patients and their families

Specialty Medicine Award

Presented to a graduating student who has shown the most interest and best performance in the traditional specialties of osteopathic medicine. Final selection is made by the chairperson of the Department of Specialty Medicine. Nomination form

 

Student D.O. of the Year (SDOY)

The Student D.O. of the Year Award (SDOY) is presented annually by the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP), a council of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). This prestigious award acknowledges students' commitment to their school, community and the osteopathic profession. Each year, COSGP invites each School or College of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM/COM) to nominate an osteopathic medical student for the SDOY award. Of these nominations one will be selected as the National Student D.O. of The Year. The National SDOY will be recognized at the AACOM Annual Meeting in April and will be the recipient of a $1000 monetary award.

The SDOY Award Recipient must be a full-time student at a SOM/COM and cannot be a previous school or national Student D.O. of the Year (SDOY) recipient. This individual should represent the following ideals and values:

i) Leadership
ii) Commitment to Community Service
iii) Dedication to the Profession
iv) Professionalism
v) Embodiment of the Osteopathic Philosophy
