OU-HCOM Policy
and Guidelines for Serving
Alcoholic Beverages
at Student Events

 
   
OU-HCOM, being a college part of Ohio University, adheres to the Ohio University alcohol policy. Ohio University and the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine recognize that the decision to use alcoholic beverages is a personal one, in part regulated by the laws of the state of Ohio, city ordinances, and policy of Ohio University, as well as standards of responsible behavior consistent with the mission of the University and the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. In general, University policy allows sale or use of alcoholic beverages in living units and at campus events only if the majority of those in attendance are of legal age. No sale or use is permitted at outdoor events that are open to the public.

These policies apply to all use and sale of alcoholic beverages on the Ohio University campus. Policies exist for:
  • Use on campus
     
  • Sale on campus
     
  • Use in residence halls
 
   
All functions and events which are (1) sponsored by the OU-HCOM or any of its student organizations, (2) carry OU-HCOM’s name, or (3) are authorized by an OU-HCOM representative, will follow Ohio University Policy and Procedure No. 24.001* on the use/sale of alcoholic beverages on Ohio University property with the following exception: In order to determine the maximum amount of alcohol to be purchased and/or provided for a non-sale event, the following formula will be used: Beer – 12 oz., Wine – 6 oz., Liquor – 1 oz. per hour of the event per person of legal age, but in no case shall the amount of alcohol exceed TWO servings per person of legal age per event. Ohio University policy has a FOUR-drink limit.
   
Student organizations that sponsor off-campus events are expected to adhere to state law, city ordinances, and policy of Ohio University, including, without limitation, the Ohio University Student Code of Conduct and the guidelines contained within this policy. Organizations found to have violated any state law, city ordinance or Ohio University policy may be subjected to the loss of registered status. Organizational officers and advisors who are sponsoring off campus events assume all legal and financial responsibility. The University is unable to defend them if legal charges are filed against them resulting from the event.
   
A student organization advisor or college representative may “sign off” on payment vouchers for food for an off campus event at which alcohol is served (note: advisors/representatives may not approve payment for alcohol either on or off campus).
