Student National Medical Association

Mission:
Student National Medical Association
is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run
organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical
students of color. Established in 1964 by Howard University
School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College, the
membership includes over 5000 medical students, pre-medical
students, residents and physicians. SNMA is committed to
supporting current and future underrepresented minority
medical students, addressing the needs of underserved
communities, and increasing the number of clinically
excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious
physicians. Within medical school, SNMA provides academic
preparation and recruitment and retention programming in
order to assure the pipeline to “diversify the face of
medicine” is supported. SNMA is also committed to addressing
and reducing morbidity and mortality of underserved
populations. The OU-HCOM SNMA chapter continually strives to
follow the mission statement.
Services
Provided:
As an organization, we provide
support and resources for students especially those from
underrepresented racial groups. We participate in various
community outreach projects including: volunteering at Good
Works, Community Health Program events (Cutler Community
Center, Gallipolis), Breast Cancer Walk, and area nursing
homes (Kimes and The Laurels). We started "Med Student for
a Day" which gives OU students a look at the journey to
medical school in general, but also a in-depth look at
OU-HCOM and osteopathic medicine.
