Mission:
The Surgery and Sports Medicine Club
(SSM) strives to promote the healing arts by providing
educational and clinical experience pertaining to the field
of surgery and sports medicine. The goal of the Surgery and
Sports Medicine Club is to introduce Year 1 and 2 students
to the various aspects and disciplines of surgery and sports
medicine. Yearly functions serve to prepare students for
their third and fourth year rotations. SSM Members also
belong to the Student Osteopathic Surgery Association and
the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine.
Members have the opportunity to join the Student American
Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics at an additional fee.
Services Provided:
The Surgery and Sports Medicine Club
has several annual community service projects that aim to
benefit the surrounding community. We also provide medical
coverage for athletic events that occur in the Athens area.
Tentative Schedule for 2012-13:
The club offers multiple lunch and
dinner lectures given by physicians in the field of surgery,
orthopedics, and sports medicine. These discussions will
give insight into the physicians' lifestyles, advice on
getting into competitive residencies, and information on the
cutting edge technologies used in practice today.
Many hands-on activities will take
place through the club including such things as knot
typing/suture clinic, staple clinic, endoscopic/laparoscopic
equipment training, physical exam/joint labs, and more.
Annually members of the surgery and
sports medicine club help provide medical support for the
Athens Marathon and other Athens, Ohio, sporting events.
Funding for these events will be
through membership dues and fundraisers.
DUES: $65.00 paid once includes all four years. Of
this fee, $20 pays for a four-year Student Osteopathic
Surgical Association (SOSA) membership and each member
receives free membership to the American Osteopathic Academy
of Sports Medicine, a suture kit and tying board. Members
also have the option of an American Osteopathic Academy or
Orthopedics (AOAO) membership for an additional $40.
