Quito

Dr. Giovanni Onore - Catholic University Insect Museum

"This exchange is excellent; ignorance is the barrier between countries," said Dr. Giovanni Onore, entomology professor at the Quito’s Pontifical Catholic University. Students received a tour of Dr. Onore’s tropical insect collection as they spent Monday learning about Ecuador’s culture, health care and history. Students also attended a lecture on Ecuadorian history and learned about blood banking at the Quito Red Cross.

Before visiting any of the workshop communities, the students raised $1,300 by selling barbecue sandwiches, hosting a silent auction and sending letters to friends and families. With the funds, they bought medicine in Quito to distribute during the trip. "It’s nice to buy all the medicine," said Jennifer on Monday, "but it will be even better when we deliver it to the people who need it."

And while Salsa proficiency is not an official workshop objective, the students ended the day with Salsa and Merenque lessons taught by Catholic University students who shared Ecuadorian food, history and dance with the students.
