Travel Days Through the Highlands

Southern Highlands

by:  Kristy Knapschaefer, Second year OUCOM student

Our stay in Mondana ended very early today. We boarded the canoe for a rainy 3.5 hour ride upstream to Misahualli, where we reloaded the cars and hit the road. Next stop – Patate.

Tungurahua mountain

The active volcano Tungurahua near Baņos.

The car ride was a bumpy adventure, but the scenery along the way was absolutely breathtaking. And for many of us, we witnessed an active volcano for the first time. Wow! We were so close, yet so far.

We arrived at our cottage in Patate around 7:30 p.m. and enjoyed a wonderful dinner- a choice of chicken, beef tenderloins or trout. Some of us then relaxed in the lodge and then off to bed.

P.S.: we had hot showers here – what a treat.

Lunch on the road

Kristy Knapschaefer and Christine Nardi prepare tuna fish sandwiches during a lunch break in the Highlands.
