The Healthy Living Project Details

Healthy Living Project is a long-term initiative facilitating socioeconomic development of rural communities affected by Chagas disease in Loja, a province in southern Ecuador. The project is currently targeting at the communities in Chaquizca, Bella Maria and Guara.

Health component

Apart from clinical activities to eliminate Chagas disease, purpose of health component is to provide health education to different groups within the community. Health promotion and facilitating are also core part of the component.
Community Organization Component
True community development requires the development of effective leadership and transparent representation of all the citizens. This component aims to strengthen those structures so that the people can be the architects of their own well being

Housing component

One of the core components of the “Healthy Living” initiative is to help the citizens of the three communities find funds to build better houses that are resistant to infestation of triatomines as well as other insects.

Economic component

The goal of this component is to provide the community members who choose to participate activities that bring in more money for personal profit and also to pool together in a community account for future development needs that the communities themselves identify as needed. These activities are jewelry making and guided bird watching tours.

Safety and Security component

 

Reinforcement of home and community to protect people from Chagas disease and social and regional issues.

 

Education component

The component aims at strengthening adult and children capacity to reinforce Chagas disease prevention and water use and conservation by organizing theatre and dance activities, publishing local legends, tales, stories, anecdotes and history to reinforce community identity.
