TDI and CIEI build new small animal holding facility

Quito - Ecuador. Work is being conducted in the construction of a new small animal holding facility at Catholic University in Ecuador. The facility will have three small animal holding rooms and one quarantine room, a procedures room, cage washing area, store room and an administrative area. Completion of this work is scheduled for November 2007.

Center for Infectious Disease Research, Quito, Ecuador

The CIDR is a cooperative project between Catholic University of Ecuador and Ohio University. Currently it employs 7 full time technicians and trains two doctoral and three undergraduate students. The Center is equipped to conduct research with biohazard level II organisms and their vectors. The Medical Entomology unit has a fully functional insectary were triatomine colonies from 7 Ecuadorian species are kept. Besides research and training of students, the center conducts periodic training for Ministry of Health and blood bank personnel.
