Detailed program information

Description of the program

The International Video Podcast Production Workshop hopes to combine students interested in communication theory and development with advanced video production students in order to create "podcast teams" that can travel to remote areas of the world and create video documentary series that explore health related topics in-depth.

Enrollment and eligibility

Graduate students and Upper-class Undergradute students are eligible for this program.  The multidisciplinary nature of the workshop makes it appropriate for two types of students:

1.    Advanced Audio and/or Video Production students who wish to put their expertise into practice by scripting, shooting, editing and distributing a podcast series that will document International healthcare projects in the field (Ecuador).   Students in this category must be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of single-camera field production and an expertise in Final Cut Pro editing software and/or scriptwriting.  Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

2.    Advanced Media Studies, Health Communication, and/or Communication Development students who wish to put their expertise into practice by researching, scripting, producing, and distributing a podcast series that will document International healthcare projects in the field (Ecuador). Students in this category must be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of communication theory and an expertise in research methods and/or scriptwriting. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

Special arrangements can also be made for faculty interested in program participation. Students from all higher education institutions in the United States and abroad are eligible to apply.

Enrollment is limited to 16 participants. Admittance into the program is at the discretion of TDI. Applications are evaluated in the order they are received. Applicants are notified within two weeks of the decision. Applications received after the formal deadline (those deemed acceptable) will be placed on a waiting list. If necessary, applications will be accepted until all available slots are full.

Activities proposed for 2009

General description:

Week 1:       The group will meet in Athens, Ohio for practical training on the equipment, group work, logistics, research, study and pre-production planning.

Weeks 2-3   The group will travel to Ecuador. After landing in Quito, Ecuador's capital, we will travel into the Coastal Region of Ecuador where we will visit communities in Manabi Province near the Pacific Ocean.  We will spend ten days in production in the Manabi Province.

Week 4:       We will return to Athens OH for intensive production work, culminating in the production of a polished Video Podcast series for distribution on I-Tunes and via the TDI website.

A detailed itinerary with specific activities will be distributed ONLY to participants and will be announced in April of 2009.
