Graduate
students and Upper-class Undergradute students are eligible
for this program. The multidisciplinary nature of the
workshop makes it appropriate for two types of students:
1.
Advanced Audio and/or Video Production
students who wish to put their expertise into practice by
scripting, shooting, editing and distributing a podcast
series that will document International healthcare projects
in the field (Ecuador). Students
in this category must be able to demonstrate a strong
understanding of single-camera field production and an
expertise in Final Cut Pro editing software and/or
scriptwriting. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.
2.
Advanced Media
Studies, Health Communication, and/or Communication
Development students
who wish to put their expertise into practice by
researching, scripting, producing, and distributing a
podcast series that will document International healthcare
projects in the field (Ecuador).
Students in this category must be able to demonstrate a
strong understanding of communication theory and an
expertise in research methods and/or scriptwriting.
Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.
Special
arrangements can also be made for faculty interested in
program participation. Students from all higher education
institutions in the United States and abroad are eligible to
apply.
Enrollment
is limited to 16 participants. Admittance into the program
is at the discretion of TDI. Applications are evaluated in
the order they are received. Applicants are notified within
two weeks of the decision. Applications received after the
formal deadline (those deemed acceptable) will be placed on
a waiting list. If necessary, applications will be accepted
until all available slots are full.
General
description:
Week
1: The group will meet in Athens, Ohio for practical
training on the equipment, group work, logistics, research,
study and pre-production planning.

Weeks 2-3
The group will travel to Ecuador. After landing in Quito,
Ecuador's capital, we will travel into the Coastal Region of
Ecuador where we will visit communities in Manabi Province
near the Pacific Ocean. We will spend ten days in
production in the Manabi Province.
Week
4: We will return to Athens OH for intensive
production work, culminating in the production of a polished
Video Podcast series for distribution on I-Tunes and via the
TDI website.
A detailed
itinerary with specific activities will be distributed ONLY
to participants and will be announced in April of 2009.
Costs of the program
1.
Program fee
(~$1,900) + cost of 4 to 8 UG credits tuition
or
Non-credit fee (~$3600)
+ $150 administrative fee.
2.
Program fee and
tuition will cover all participant's expenses in country
(food, lodging, transportation, logistics, etc). Cost not
covered include: souvenirs, entertainment, telephone and
internet access charges, food while in route from USA to
Quito to USA.
3.
Airline ticket
cost (participants are responsible for arranging their own
flight,
see logistics page).
Past participants have purchase tickets from cities in the
USA to Quito from $750 to $1000, depending on dates and
airline.
4.
A backup credit
card is a good idea in the event of unforeseen expenses. You
can cash travelers checks in Quito, but are unlikely to be
able to do so at most of our other destinations. Traveler’s
checks are useless outside of the cities.
5.
Participants that
take place in more than one TDI Sponsored program in Ecuador
in summer 2008 will receive a $200 discount in the program
fee of one of them. For information about other

a. A summary of your video production experience
(classes taken, projects you have worked on) and;
b. A DEMO REEL of your non-fiction work/documentary
(DVD).

Students will be notified of the decision in two weeks
after the receipt of their application materials.

A non
refundable deposit will be required upon acceptance into
the program. The deposit will be applied to the program
costs and deducted from the participant’s bill:

to pay a non-refundable deposit of $500 to the
Bursar's office (Chubb Hall). Cash, check or credit card
payments accepted. This deposit will be applied to the
overall program fee.
Non-OU Participants will be asked to mail
non-refundable deposit of $500 to the
