BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Gary Snyder is director of communications and marketing for the Ohio State University College of Medicine. His responsibilities include communications support and strategic marketing for the Ohio State medical school, and the schools of Allied Medical Professions and Biomedical Sciences. This work centers on communications and marketing to recruit top medical students and residents to Ohio State, communications to strengthen connections with the College’s 12,000-member medical alumni group, and supporting development communications with donors in order to increase funding support to the College. He is responsible for setting national reputation, branding and messaging strategies and campaigns for the College as well. While at Ohio State, he helped create the Office for Global Health Education and now serves on the Global Health Education Advisory Committee at the College. He is an instructor in the School of Public Health, and teaches the “Marketing Health Services” course in the highly ranked Masters of Health Administration program at Ohio State. He currently is researching the immigrant Central Ohio Latino community’s knowledge and practices about nutrition and exercise, where they receive their health information, and what most influences their health behaviors. Prior to joining Ohio State in 2001, he helped lead communications, national media relations and publications for Ohio University’s medical college. He also directed the national marketing for the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) residency programs in Ohio. Snyder helped build the medical school’s SHARE (Student Health and Rural Experience) Kenya program - working on communications with media, conducting health communications and social marketing field work, and facilitating the program’s development with Kenyan institutions. He is a member of the University’s Tropical Disease Institute, and a lecturer on “Communications and Tropical Disease Biology.” His communications and research interests are: marketing and brand development; health communication; international health; media coverage of health issues, and tropical disease; communication and tropical/infectious disease management; culture, communication and health; social marketing; health policy; peace and conflict resolution, and communication development/KAP studies. A graduate of the acclaimed Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Snyder is a member of the Kappa Tau Alpha National Honor Society in Journalism and Mass Communication, and received the International Scholar Medal for his work in international health communications from Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society in 1999. |
