TDI and CIEI provide training to  personnel from the National Chagas disease Control Program of the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador

"¡Con nuestra labor, sin Chagas el Ecuador!"
[with our work, no more Chagas in Ecuador!].
This is the new
war-cry coined by the field personnel as they set out to implement in their regions what was learned in the workshop.

Manabí. August 2007. The success of the efforts of the National Chagas Disease Control program in Ecuador depends on the adequate application of vector control methods and the implementation of information technology as integral part of the program.

Personnel from the Tropical Disease Institute (Ohio Univesity) and the Center for Infectious Disease Research (Catholic University of Ecuador), teamed with HD Hudson Manufacturing Co. PLAN Internacional Ecuador and the Dirección Provincial de Salud de Manabí, to organize a three day training workshop on current methods for Chagas disease control.

The training was attended by 63 personnel from the Ministry of health. participants included 11 supervisors and 52 field entomologist. Local and National authorities fully supported the training program and facilitated all necessary logistical arrangements.

The trained consisted of an initial knowledge evaluation, followed by talks about Chagas disease in general and in Ecuador, triatomine vector biology and theory about appropriate insecticide application techniques.

LLuberas, and Grijalva answer questions after a lecture about Chagas disease and the appropriate use and maintainance of insectiside spraying equipment.
Locale: Main auditorioum of the Dirección Provincial de Salud de Manabí.
Lluberas, directs the practical training of field personnel in the execercize nicknamed "la pared de los lamentos" [the wailing wall]. Here participants learn the speed of movement and the correct motion to ensure application insecticide. Location: Dirección de Salud de Manabí.
Practical training activities then focused to practical training on care and maintenance of spraying equipment, use of personal protection equipment, and techniques for effective delivery of insecticide.

During the last two days, activities moved to the field, to "Jesús Maria" and "San Gregorio" communities. There, participants received practical training on the use of GPS receivers, informed consent procedures, adequate information gathering and data management in the field.

Participants were divided into working groups and assigned a number of houses to be examined within the community. Team members, under the supervision of biologist from TDI and CIEI took turns conducting the different activities needed for adequate vectorial control. These included initial approach to the head of the household and informed consent, intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary triatomine searches, preparation  of the house and application of insecticide, and all other practical aspects of vector control.

Finally, participants received a final graded evaluation. Only those that reach 75% of the grade received a certificate signed by the course organizers and validated by the Ministry of Health.

"We feel very good about this training, we learned a lot of new information and how to do our work better", said Freddy Veliz, from the Chagas Control program in Manabí province.

So, it is with renewed energy, knowledge and enthusiastically yelling "Con nuestra labor, sin Chagas el Ecuador!", that the field workers and supervisors of the National Control program set out to continue their fight against Chagas disease in Ecuador.
